TIP FOR THE WEEK

Dear G.B.,
What should I do with customers who keep forgetting to bring in their library card? Can I kill them & eat them or what?

Dear Salivating,
You would not believe the number times I have been asked this question over the years & I will tell you what I have always told the others; No, you must not kill & eat the customers.
Believe me, I sympathize with your frustration. Many's the time this has happened to me on the desk and great was the carnage but then I realized, if you kill them & eat them, then they won't learn nothing.
Here's what I recommend: When a customer tells you they do not have their library card but asks if they can borrow anyway, just take a deep breath & slowly count to ten until the blind rage subsides (if you are a fire breather or are endowed with laser breath be careful when you exhale) then ever so gently pick them up and bite them.
If they asked you politely, you may wish not to actually bite them but can instead bite off a piece of their hat or other accessory, your choice. Observe as I demonstrate.

How to bite a customer politely

There, see, easy-peezy.
If, after the warning bite they still insist on borrowing, turn them upside down and shake them ever so politely to help them find their ID then look them up and proceed with check out as normal.
Now, if during this process their library card falls out of their pocket, then you may kill them for the blaggard that they are but DO NOT EAT THEM! Drape their lifeless body artfully, yet neatly (a tidy, well ordered circulation desk is the hallmark of a good branch I always say) on the counter as a warning to others who would waste your valuable time.
